On March 21, 2016, President Ed Scott and Executive Board Member Darren Fisch met with the attorneys who represent the 7-11 Corporation with regards to the petition filed with the Town of North Hempstead proposing a new 7-11 store location on the corner of Willis Avenue and Bagley Avenue. (Formerly Mitch And Toni’s Restaurant)
Chances are you are aware that Willis Avenue in Albertson is NOT zoned for 24 Hour Businesses. This is the main reason we have been able to enjoy living in a wonderful little hamlet with relatively low crime and quiet evenings. This is a vital part of keeping any neighborhood safe and quiet during the late evening/early morning hours.
In recent civic meetings leading up to Election Day 2015, Town Supervisor Judy Bosworth and Councilman Peter Zuckerman stated they would not allow 7-11 or any other 24 hour businesses to operate at that location. We have also been assured in the recent months of 2016 that this was still the case.
BUT, obviously 7-11 has plenty of resources and contacts to circumvent zoning and local ordinances.
We are confident the our elected officials will stand their ground on the position regarding this matter and deny the 7-11 petition which would ease the restrictions in our quiet neighborhood that have been in place for decades. But they will need us to stand behind them and give them the additional support by showing up to ALL the meetings and hearings.
Otherwise, 7-11 will turn our quiet surrounding residential streets into constant traffic all hours of the day/night. Additionial common activity at 24 hour convienience stores is day laborers gathering every morning, drinking alcohol accompanied with urinating in public and drug dealing once the sun goes down.
Make sure you come out and fight for our small hamlet to remain free from the big corporation retailer 7-11 that is willing to sacrifice our neighborhood for their financial gain. We will lose this fight if you do not come out in BIG numbers and express your concerns.
There is currently a Zoning Board Meeting scheduled for April 6, 2016. The time has yet to be determined. (we will update soon) Please find the time to make ALL of the meetings. If not, we will be paying the consequences for years to come.
